The origins of Christmas beer:

When the month of December approaches, it is an opportunity for all beer lovers to succumb to the very special aromas of the famous Christmas beer. But where does this custom of Christmas beer come from? Difficult to know the real story because there are many legends from the Nordic countries but it would seem that the real story is more classic. MaBiereBox today reveals the secrets of this beer to taste around the tree.

The origin of Christmas beer is obviously a brewer's story. Their invention is rooted in technical, traditional and historical constraints. In the 18th century, the conservation of beer did not make it possible to keep beers during the summer. This is why the brewers used to submit to the rhythm of the seasons to produce the precious beverage. With the arrival of autumn, it was therefore time for them to prepare the brews for the winter. It was also an opportunity for the brewers to use all the remaining raw material, in order to welcome the new harvest. This is how this generous beer appeared that was nicknamed “October beer” at the time. It is an important beer because it was the first of the year. Thanks to an optimal temperature, the latter had the opportunity to ripen properly over the few months at the end of the year in order to offer the best flavors. Legend has it that this tasty beers are offered to their employees. This sharing value and the warm flavors of this October beer probably helped make it the Christmas beer we know today. And even if the techniques have evolved, the tradition is still there.

What is a Christmas beer?

Christmas beers are beers specially brewed for the holidays. For consumer beers, the taste is usually sweet and is intended for a wide audience. On the other hand, Christmas craft beers are beers of character, with a much more pronounced taste. Regarding their production, we can highlight their brewing method: they are brewed in small, limited brewing tanks which thus preserves all their quality. In terms of characteristics, these custom beers are generally stronger in alcohol, amber or dark. The fruit of brewing according to a special recipe for the occasion, they offer an often spicy taste, obtained by brewing different types of hops and malt. A balance of aromas, round in the mouth which satisfies the taste buds of beer specialists every year during the Christmas holidays.

Jenlain: the first Christmas beer fair is this Friday evening

The Brotherhood of the Order of Jenlain Beer is organizing the very first Christmas beer fair. It will bring together microbreweries and will take place this Friday evening, to allow working people to stop by.

Putting the spotlight on Christmas beers and especially local micro-breweries, this is the idea that the Confrérie des bières de Jenlain will put into practice, which is organizing the very first dedicated fair this Friday. “Christmas beer was traditionally a beer that brewers gave to their distributor at the end of the year. It is often a spicy beer, which we left to work for longer, ”affirm Daniel Gravez, president of the Confrérie de l'Ordre des Bières de Jenlain and Vincent Croy, secretary. For the first time, the brotherhood therefore wanted to put this seasonal drink on the front of the stage, while presenting the microbreweries, which very often do not "have the opportunity to make themselves known". And yet, they are surfing the trend of returning to local products. “Microbreweries have flourished like hot cakes. There is such a diversity of beers, as with wine. People started to discover new products. There is surely a fad. But that takes hold over time, ”continue Daniel Gravez and Vincent Croy.

A dozen breweries have already announced that they will be present, including the traditional Brasserie de l'Avesnois du Quesnoy, the Brasserie d'Amblise de Crespin, the Brasserie Bellenaert de Bailleul, the brasserie de l'Au- beyond Valenciennes, the Choulette d'Hordain, the Villette de Saultain brewery,  the Thiérache in Ohain , and the Duyck brewery in Jenlain. This show is intended to be a nod to local know-how, which continues. And next year, the brotherhood plans to organize this event over two days, and is thinking of setting up a similar fair in March, this time around spring beer. The Christmas beer fair will be held this Friday evening, so that working people can take advantage of it.

Christmas beer fair, this Friday, from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., in the village hall. Entrance: 5 euros.
