JENLAIN'S STORY:

Jenlain, Gentlinium in Latin, is in an act of 885 named as a possession of the church of Cambrai. An altar is mentioned in 1148 and a church in 1181. Jenlain, old forms also Jenlaing, Genlaing, Genlang, Genlain, Genlin, was in 1186 a parish of the church chapter of Cambrai. The parish a  existed until the Revolution and is reconstituted unchanged after the Revolution.

In September 1244, Gauthier de Genlayn and several other lords of Flanders rendered a judgment awarding to Thomas and Jeanne, his wife, count and countess of Flanders and Hainaut, the lands of Crévecœur and Arleux forfeited from Mathieu de Montmirail for the damage he had caused to the Count and Countess, and condemns him to 1,000 marcs of silver.
This village is the capital of a national guard battalion; there is a post relay and two post coach relays.
The population of Jenlain, which in 1707 was only 181 individuals and in 1789 only 458, today comprises 959, including 43 indigents and 4 beggars.
Its territory consists of 584 hectares, namely: 500 in arable land, 23 in meadows, 30 in planted land, 4 in woods, 8 in built properties, 18 in roads and paths, and 1 in river.
Wheat, rye, barley, oats, broad beans, field beans, hibernache, potatoes and beets are grown there. Its main product is wheat.

In the feudal period, the haughty lordship of Jenlain was a sub-fief of the haughty lordship of Ausnoit (Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes), and in turn possessed one of the three fiefs of the land of Bruay (Bruay-sur- Scheldt).

In 1890, Jenlain owned a chicory factory, a dyeworks, 3 water mills and 4 breweries

A legend tells that in the 15th century, when Hainaut became part of Burgundy, a Burgundian lord named Jean had his castle built there. He wanted to form a Frankish territory on the lands surrounding the current town and took the name of Jean Ier, known as 'Jean l'Un' in the local patois. According to this legend, he would have given his name to the town which would have been called successively 'Jeanlun' then 'Jeanlain' and 'Jenlain'.
