Spring Beer:

In view of the success that its big brother "Christmas Beer" has received, the Spring Beer fair aims to promote local brewers.

The vocation of this new fair, like the "Christmas Beer", is to become an unmissable event in the regional brewing calendar.

The origins of beer from  spring:

Spring is at its tip, and with it spring beers bloom in rays and pressure.

The definition of the term has evolved over time: the spring beers that we find in supermarkets today have nothing to do with the traditional seasons.

What is a modern spring beer?

In France, spring beers are also called beers of March. These spring beers originate from the North. They were brought back into fashion in the 1980s and now correspond to a beer marketed in March. They are generally light and fruity, produced in limited quantities.

The term spring beer has been democratized by major brands to refer to beers that were traditionally called “seasonal beers”.

Traditional seasonal beer or farmhouse ale:

The ancestor of spring beer, seasonal beer (or more simply called “season”) has its origins in Walloon Belgium. It corresponds to a beer brewed at the beginning of winter intended to be consumed from spring. It is kept in barrels until it is drunk.

It was initially brewed in the winter on farms, for seasonal workers who came to work there in the summer. It had to be thirst-quenching and low in alcohol (around 3%) because on the hottest days, workers drank liters and liters of it. Over the years, its alcohol content has increased slightly to exceed 6%.

One of the most famous seasonal beers is Saison Dupont, from the Belgian brewery Dupont. It was already brewed in 1844 in their farm-brewery. In recent years, the brewery has released a “dry-hopped” version, that is to say with the addition of fresh hops during fermentation, which gives it more aromas.

Jenlain: the Confrérie des Bières launches its Spring Beer on March 11

Atmosphere and tastings guaranteed!

After a huge success with Christmas Beer in November, the Jenlain Beer Brotherhood decided to launch Spring Beer. This time, no Santa Claus, but daffodils to announce Spring. There will therefore be a dozen regional microbreweries that will present their Spring beers. A tradition originally from Walloon Belgium, beers were brewed in winter on farms for seasonal workers who came to work in the summer. They had to be thirst-quenching and low in alcohol.

“The goal is to allow small breweries in the sector to make themselves known to the general public, all in a spirit of conviviality, we do not want a classic beer fair. We want the exchange, the discussion between the visitors and the brewers“, comments Daniel Gravez, the president of the Confrérie. For the occasion, some breweries have joined forces to release a special brew. Similarly, the Jenlain brewery will be releasing its 100th anniversary beer for the event: Happy Blonde and Ambrée.

See you on March 11 from 5 to 11 p.m., Jenlain village hall. Admission €5, free tasting. Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health, consume in moderation.
